BOYDS, MD (July 13, 2016) – The Washington Spirit has signed Danish national team defender/midfielder Line Sigvardsen Jensen, pending receipt of her P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). As per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“To play in the NWSL is a dream come true, and I am so excited to play with Washington Spirit and be part of the team and club,” said Sigvardsen Jensen. “I hope to contribute with my qualities as a soccer player and as a person. I can’t wait to be there and get started.”

Sigvardsen Jensen has played at various levels of the Danish national team since 2004. She made her debut with the full national team in 2009 and has 47 caps with the side. In 2008, she and her U17 Danish teammates placed third in the U17 UEFA European Championship. Sigvardsen Jensen also played in the U20 FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2008 and the UEFA Women’s European Championship in 2013. The 24 year old played club soccer for Hornum, Aars, and B52 Aalborg before playing for the Champions League team Fortuna Hjørring from 2009-2016 where she made 239 appearances.  The midfielder/defender was awarded the Årets Talent award in 2009, a prestigious award recognizing an up and coming talent.

“Line Sigvardsen Jensen is a quality international player who will be a really good fit for our team and needs,” said Spirit general manager and head coach Jim Gabarra. “We look forward to integrating Line into our team and style of play.”

The Spirit had an open roster spot with which to sign Sigvardsen Jensen due to the season-ending injury of forward Laura del Rio.

The Spirit will play its next home game next Saturday, July 30th against regional rivals Sky Blue FC. For tickets, fans can go to tickets.washingtonspirit.com
