BOYDS, MD (April 2, 2016) – The Washington Spirit intrasquad scrimmage finished in thrilling fashion as 2016 College Draft pick Cheyna Williams slotted her penalty kick beyond Stephanie Labbé to give her side the 3-1 win following the penalty shootout. Christine Nairn and amateur call up Myra Konte each tallied a goal for their respective sides during regular time, which led to the shootout.
The Spirit was originally slated to play the University of North Carolina (UNC), but UNC withdrew due to player availability. The Spirit went forward with hosting a match, but elected to change it to an intrasquad game. The match consisted of two 35 minute halves.
The first goal of the match came in the 16th minute as Nairn earned a foul only a few yards outside of the opposing box. Nairn struck a low, driven shot past the wall and beyond Labbé to propel her side to a 1-0 lead.
The game drew level in the second half as amateur call up and Braddock Road Star Elite player Myra Konte scored in the 39th minute. The goal materialized as a counterattack started by defender Caprice Dydasco. Dydasco layed the ball off to Konte in the box and Konte slipped the ball under Wys.
The game remained 1-1 as regular time expired sending the scrimmage to penalty kicks. The navy team penalty takers included: Shelina Zadorsky (miss), Megan Oyster (miss), Dydasco (goal), Alyssa Kleiner (miss). While, the white team penalty takers were: Nairn (goal), Joanna Lohman (goal), Cheyna Williams (goal). Kelsey Wys made two saves helping her side win the shootout 3-1.
Spirit general manager and head coach Jim Gabarra was pleased with the performance of the full squad during the scrimmage and is looking forward to the team’s next preseason match against Duke University. “It will be more refined and players will have a chance to step into roles that are vacated by our US and Canada national team players…It will also be a good dry run for the home opener against Boston,” remarked Gabarra.
Next week the Spirit will continue its preseason run against Duke University on April 9th. The Washington Spirit will begin its 2016 season on Saturday, April 16 at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex at 7:00 pm against the Boston Breakers.
