BOYDS, Md. (May 22, 2015) – The Washington Spirit (3-2-1, 10 points) are back on the road again for this week’s game against the Western New York Flash (1-3-1, 4 points) on Saturday May 23rd at 7:00 p.m. Last game, the Spirit had a last-minute goal lift them to three points and second place in the league.

“After showing great character and grinding out an important win Saturday the team are up for the tough challenge away at WNY Flash,” said head coach Mark Parsons. The players’ attention to detail and incredible work ethic has been very strong since the first day of pre-season. Our aim is to maintain that standard this week as we prepare for a game we view as very important in our season.”

The Washington Spirit continue to finish strong in games with Crystal Dunn and Francisca Ordega providing an attacking spark for the club. Last Saturday the Spirit snagged a goal in the 92nd minute of the match off a goal from Ordega assisted by Dunn. The game started off slowly, but the Spirit combined for a handful of passes and showed their will to fight through the odds to come away with a 1-0 win over Sky Blue FC.

As Ordega left earlier this week for her World Cup duties with Nigeria, the Spirit will look for returners Tiffany Weimer and Caroline Miller to step up. Christine Nairn will look to join the forces up top either with her through balls from the midfield or her constant runs to space.

The Washington Spirit have held teams for a consistent 90 minutes with the starting backline of Whitney Church, Estelle Johnson, Megan Oyster, Katherine Reynolds and goalkeeper Kelsey Wys representing a physical presence and will need to be strong for the game against Western New York Flash.

The Western New York Flash is currently sitting at the bottom of the table as the club works to allow their new players to gel together. The Flash will be without their goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo as she has been sidelined for two to four weeks after sustaining a Grade 1 right acromioclavicular joint separation on Saturday May 16th.  Back up goalkeeper Chantel Jones will also be unavailable for the match after receiving a one match suspension for her actions in the Flash’s match against FC Kansas City last week.

The Washington Spirit will look to come out stronger and quicker this weekend to secure a solid road win before coming returning home on Saturday May 30th to face Portland Thorns FC.
