Following an impressive victory over the Houston Dash on Memorial Day, the Washington Spirit will take on the Boston Breakers on Sunday June 1 at 6:30 pm ET.
The victory over the Dash moved the Spirit to 5th place with a 4-4-1 record and 13 points through their nine games. The Breakers are coming off a 4-1 victory over the Portland Thorns. With that win, they moved to 2-6 and out of last place.
The Spirit were able to pull out the victory against the Dash by way of the highlight goal of the season. With the score knotted at 2-2 in the 90th minute, midfielder Christine Nairn picked up a ball outside the 18-yard box and struck a beautifully placed ball into the upper 90, leaving Houston goalkeeper Erin McLeod no chance to reach it. The goal has been getting airtime across a variety of networks, and with any justice, will be one of ESPN’s Top 10 plays of the month. It was Nairn’s second goal of the season.
Earlier, in the game, the Spirit struck first, getting a goal from Diana Matheson, who capitalized off an early miscue from McLeod to give Washington a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute. Later in the first half, Matheson played a cross over the top that found Taylor in the box, where she was able to score the Spirit’s second goal. Matheson is leading Washington in goals with five, while Taylor has three on the season.
The Spirit take on the Breakers, who come off their second win of the season. The Breakers earned that victory over the defending league champion the Portland Thorns FC. A major key to their win was the stellar play of Jazmine Reeves, who scored a hat trick and assisted on the other goal.
It must be noted that Breakers Head Coach Tom Durkin made significant changes to the starting lineup and sat established starters Heather O’Reilly, Lianne Sanderson, Kristi Mewis and Joanna Lohman. That move paid off against the Thorns, so keep an eye on what lineup Durkin decides on for the match against the Spirit.
“This will be an important first game on the road and we will be determined to start well,” said head coach Mark Parsons. “We are catching Boston on a high, but will remain focused on our roles and objectives.”
After a 2-0-1 home stand, the Spirit will travel to Boston for their match against the Breakers. It is the first of their four-game road trip. The Breakers will host the Spirit at Harvard Stadium on Sunday June 1st at 6:30 pm ET.
