Jasmyne Spencer scores in Apollon loss, bringing optimism for next week

Washington Spirit forward Jasmyne Spencer scored a goal assisted by fellow NWSL player Sinead Farrelly on Thursday for Apollon Limassol LFC in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, but her loan club still fell to a 2-1 defeat against Austrian club SV Neulengbach in Cyprus.

The two teams will meet again Oct. 16 for the second leg of their Round of 32 match up.

Farrelly, on loan from FC Kansas City, and three other NWSL players were included in the starting lineup for Apollon – with Boston Breakers forward Lianne Sanderson and midfielder Joanna Lohman as well as Seattle Reign FC goalkeeper Michelle Betos included in the Cypriat club’s starting XI.

Spencer was brought on in the 71st minute as coach Angelos Tsolakis looked for a way back into the match after Apollon fell behind 2-0 two minutes earlier on Neulengbach captain Nina Burger’s second goal of the match.

The Spirit forward saw to it the Austrian club would have to endure a tense six minutes of stoppage time with a goal for Apollon in the 88th minute that was set up by Farrelly.

Both Lohman and Sanderson had shots in injury time as Apollon pressed for an equalizer, but the Cyprus club will need to overcome a one-goal deficit and two away goals when they travel to Austria next week.
