Boyds, Md. (August 3, 2013) – The Washington Spirit (1-14-4) suffered a narrow 1-0 loss on Saturday to Sky Blue FC (10-6-4) at Yurcak Field in Piscataway Township, N.J.
Monica Ocampo scored the game’s only goal in the 58th minute on a feed from Katy Freels. Ocampo beat two Washington defenders to the front of the goal and Freels hit her with a pass from outside the box, which she was able to tap in from close range. The goal was Ocampo’s sixth of the season, and Freels notched her fifth assist on the play.
Chantel Jones started in net for the Spirit in place of Ashlyn Harris, who was scratched from the lineup due to injury. Jones turned in a solid performance in just her third start of the season, making three saves.
The Spirit had several scoring chances throughout the match, but were unable to capitalize. In the 23rd minute, Lori Lindsey orchestrated a run for Washington and set up Conny Pohlers with a close range look, but Pohlers’ chip shot went wide left.
Pohlers nearly equalized for the Spirit in the 74th minute when she caught the Sky Blue defense off guard, stealing the ball away from their back line deep in the box. However, her shot was once again off the mark.
Diana Matheson provided Washington with one final look at the goal in the second minute of stoppage time, but her shot from 30 yards was high and wide.
Sky Blue out shot Washington 18-7 for the game, as goalkeeper Jillian Loyden recorded her first clean sheet of the season.
Lindsey, who donned the “C” patch for the Spirit, started her 19th straight match and improved her team-best time on the pitch to 1,692 minutes. The newest member of the Spirit, Marisa Abegg, made her first NWSL start after playing 59 minutes in a substitute role on Wednesday against Western New York.
Sky Blue FC is now tied for second in the NWSL in points with Portland Thorns FC at 34. FC Kansas City remains in sole possession of first place with 35, and Western New York holds the fourth and final playoff spot at 31 points. The Flash drew Boston 2-2 on Saturday night.
Saturday’s match was the Spirit’s last on the road this season, as they finish the year with three straight at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
Washington will host the Chicago Red Stars on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET at the SoccerPlex’s Maureen Hendricks Field in their next game. Tickets are available at: https://tickets.washingtonspirit.com.
