The Washington Spirit close out a three-game road trip, as well as the opening third of their season, with a visit to the Boston Breakers on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
The game at Dilboy Stadium will be the third meeting between the two clubs of the young National Women’s Soccer League season, with the previous matchups resulting in 1-1 draws. Both teams are coming in looking to rebound from losses the last time out, and for the Spirit (1-3-3), it’s a chance to build momentum before a three-week break from action.
The club won’t suit up again until a June 15 matchup with Western New York Flash at the Maryland SoccerPlex, for which over 2,700 tickets have already been sold (tickets.washingtonspirit.com).
“We think it’s very important to go into this break on a high note,” Spirit head coach Mike Jorden said. “We’ve been able to take quite a few positives from the season so far, and we want to close out this opening stretch with a win against a tough opponent.”
The first two contests against the Breakers (2-1-2) came out about as even as could be. In the season opener, Tiffany McCarty gave the Spirit a first half lead scoring the first goal in franchise history off a Stephanie Ochs cross. Then Boston’s Sydney Leroux equalized in stoppage time to steal the points in Boston.
When the Breakers traveled to the Maryland SoccerPlex on May 11, it was the visitors who jumped ahead in the first half via Joanna Lohman and the Spirit who drew level in the second through a lightning strike by captain Lori Lindsey.
Saturday’s game in suburban Boston will be a clash of two of the league’s most potent attacks, as Washington and Boston are the only squads to score four goals in a match this season.
Spirit midfielder Diana Matheson and Leroux are tied for the league lead in goals with four each, and both teams will look to bounce back from disappointments.
The Spirit followed a 4-2 triumph against Seattle with a 2-0 loss at Portland, while the Breakers suffered their first defeat of the season by a 2-0 margin at FC Kansas City. Until that point, neither team had been shut out.
