Spirit Academy teams post strong results on the road for second straight week

Boyds, Md. – The Washington Spirit’s Maryland and Virginia Academies traveled to the Tri-State region to face New York City FC and Sky Blue FC Academies over the weekend, with both earning multiple positive results on the road.

For the Spirit Academy – Maryland program, it was their second weekend in a row traveling North for some challenging U.S. Soccer Girls’ Development Academy matchups, and once again they were able to rack up points with strong offensive and defensive performances.

The Spirit Academy – Maryland U-14s and U-15s took on NYCFC Academy on Saturday at the WCFC Complex in Orangeburg, New York, earning 2-0 and 1-0 wins respectively. For the U-14s, Sydney Feiler and Finley Lavin provided scoring in the 9th and 31st minutes, while the defensive turned in another outstanding performance, finishing with their second clean sheet of the young season.

The Spirit Academy – Maryland U-15s only needed one strike from Cate Shepherd in the 30th minute to lock up the win and take home three points. Much like the U-14s, the U15’s claimed their second clean sheet on the year with a dominant defensive showing.

The Spirit Academy – Virginia U-18/19s also picked up three points in their matchup with NYCFC, securing a 3-2 victory in a fast paced matchup between two high-powered offenses. Camryn Taylor opened up the scoring with a goal in the 10th minute, giving the Spirit Virginia U-18/19s a 1-0 lead until NYCFC’s Kaley Brenner fired back to make it 1-1 at the half. The Spirit Virginia U-18s came out of the halftime break focused, making it 2-1 after a 47th minute goal from Margaret Beckman, and ultimately 3-1 after a Gabrielle Robinson scored in the 61st. NYCFC cut the lead to 3-2 in the 79th, but the Spirit defense held strong the rest of the way.

The Spirit Academy – Virginia U-18/19s followed up their win over NYCFC with a 2-1 victory over Sky Blue FC Academy on Sunday, fueled by goals from Caitlin Sutton and Gabrielle Robinson. The Spirit Academy – Maryland U-15 and U-18/19 teams both won their games 6-2 in commanding fashion from start to finish.

For the Spirit Maryland U15s, Cate Shepard shined, scoring first from the penalty spot and then twice from open play to complete a hat-trick on the day. Hoi Ching Luk, Rachel Song, and Dani Todd also contributed with one goal apiece in what quickly became a dominant win. The Spirit Maryland U-18/19s’ Taylor Carter and Mary-Kaitlyn Barnes scored in the first half to make it 2-1 at the break, and Leyah Hall-Robinson found the back of the net four times from the 73rd to the 86th minutes, continuing her dominant start to the season. 

Most Spirit Academy Maryland and Virginia teams will be back in action again on September 29 for matchups against Arlington Soccer Association and FC Virginia, respectively. The Maryland Academy will be playing at Baltimore Polytechnic High School beginning at 9 a.m., and the Spirit – Virginia Academy will be at Lake Fairfax Park beginning at 10 a.m. [Full Schedule]
