Gabarra became general manager and head coach of the Washington Spirit ahead of the 2016 NWSL season, the most successful season in Spirit history. The former U.S. Men’s National Team member and 1988 Olympian is the only person to have been head coach of a team in every year there has been a professional women’s soccer league in the United States.

He spent 10 years in the D.C. area coaching the Washington Freedom, leading them to back-to-back appearances in the WUSA Championship in 2002 and 2003, winning in 2003. Between WUSA and WPS, he coached the Freedom to a USL W-League Championship in 2007. Following the return of a Division 1 professional league in WPS, the Key West, FL native the led the Washington Freedom to two consecutive appearances in WPS playoffs in 2009 and 2010. Gabarra remained in the DC region while commuting to New Jersey for the first three seasons of NWSL as coach of Sky Blue FC, before landing the Spirit job closer to home for 2016, where the Spirit led the league for much of the season, advanced to the NWSL Championship match in October, and just missed out on a Championship on Penalties.

In addition to Gabarra’s GM and Head Coach role with the Spirit, he is also responsible for the technical curriculum and coaching staff within the Spirit’s growing youth setup. With the professional season concluded for the year, his more frequent appearances at the youth Training Centers and upcoming Spirit Development Academy ID sessions offers female youth players an unprecedented opportunity to learn from, as well as be seen by, the most experienced professional women’s coach in the world.

Spirit Academy Training Centers are open to any intermediate to advanced female player born 2004 to 2009. They consist of 1-hour sessions, grouped together to allow the most ambitious players to attend back to back sessions.

The Training Centers are designed to develop soccer skills and expertise from all four pillars of the game: Technical Ability, Tactical Ability, Physical Ability and Psychological Strength.  Each session focuses on enhancing technical efficiency in a high intensity, competition driven environment.
