The W-League announced its Team of the Week for Week 8 of the 2013 season, honoring the top players in league matches over the previous weekend. For the third time this season, Spirit Reserves midfielder/forward Amber Stobbs earned recognition for her role in Washington’s 2-1 victory over the New York Magic.

Stobbs tallied a goal and an assist in the Spirit Reserves’ bounce-back win against the Magic in Ocean City, N.J. on Sunday evening. A product of Chelsea Ladies in the English league, Stobbs currently leads the W-League in  assists with eight through nine games.

Late in the second half of Sunday’s match, Stobbs drove a cross square through the New York defense. Teammate Ashley Herndon surged in front of her defender and smacked an authoritative header inside the near post for the 1-0 Washington lead in the 66th minute and adding to Stobbs assist total.

Playing in the midfield, Stobbs scored the eventual game-winner in the 82nd minute when substitute Jessica Van Dyke broke free down the left side and sent a low pass into the Magic penalty area. Spirit Reserves midfielder Monica Mendes spun and deftly touched the ball wide to Stobbs who hammered her shot through a crashing New York defender and into the Magic net for the 2-0 lead.

The Spirit Reserves remain on the road for the third week in a row, traveling to the New Jersey Wildcats on Saturday July 6th. Match time is slated for 2 p.m. ET at St John Vianney High School in Holmdel, New Jersey.
