Nairn Scores Twice to Earn First Franchise Victory
With the benefit of a goal in the first five minutes, the D.C. United Women intensified the offensive pressure in the second half on their way to a 3-0 road victory over the New York Magic. The Penn State duo of Christine Nairn and Bri Hovington provided the fireworks for D.C., combining for all three goals on the evening in the first win in club history.
It did not take long from the opening whistle for D.C. United Women to assert themselves. Forward Tiffany Brown
seemingly broke free just outside the left corner of the box, but was clipped down before having a chance at the net. Nairn lined up the resulting free kick and fired a low, hooking blast around the New York wall and untouched into the Magic goal for the 1-0 advantage in the 5th minute.
D.C. maintained the larger amount of control throughout the first half, defensively thwarting New York’s biggest threat Rashidah Sherman. The speedy Sherman nearly drew the game even late in the half when she found herself ahead of the defense and pounded a headed shot on goal. United Women goalkeeper DiDi Haracic
demonstrated point-blank heroics, smothering the shot in an athletic save.
The second half really saw D.C. United Women up the offensive tempo and launch a relentless attack. Nairn fed fellow teammate Hovington a slotted pass down the right side in the 50th minute, allowing the defender to push forward into the Magic defensive third. Hovington bolted around the right side of the last defender and rocketed a low angle shot from very near the endline into the opposite side netting to double the lead.
Sixteen minutes later Nairn again found herself setting up a free kick off of a foul from 25 yards, but this time from the opposite right corner of the box. Instead of bending her shot, she fired a line-drive cannon at the near post side, beating both the defensive wall and Magic keeper simultaneously to grab D.C.’s third and final goal on the night.
D.C. United Women open up their home season this Thursday, June 9th for a rematch with the New Jersey Wildcats at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Maryland. Match time is scheduled for 7:00PM.
