The Washington Spirit announced today the club has signed Turbine Potsdam defender Alex Singer, pending the receipt of her International Transfer Certificate (ITC), for the remainder of the 2014 and 2015 NWSL seasons. Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Singer is expected to join the team as soon as possible following the conclusion of the German Frauen-Bundesliga season.

The 26-year-old from Rye, New York played at numerous clubs around the world including Perth Glory of Australia, Dalsjöfors GoIF in Sweden and Turbine Potsdam in Germany. Most notably, Singer is very familiar with the DMV area as she played for the Washington Freedom from 2007-2010.

“I am excited to welcome Alex to the Spirit and look forward to her joining up with the team shortly,” Washington Spirit general manager and coach Mark Parsons said. “Alex is an experienced, versatile defender with plenty of pace and ability that will benefit our team on and off the field.”

Before embarking on a professional career, Singer had a successful four years at the University of Virginia, where she helped lead her team to four NCAA tournament appearances, including one in the Elite 8.

“I’m really looking forward to joining the Spirit,” Singer said. “I’ve heard only great things about Mark’s philosophy and the club. I’ve been playing internationally for a few years now, and experienced different football styles and cultures so it’s exciting to come back to the US and especially to an environment like the SoccerPlex where I began my pro career. I’m super motivated and I can’t wait to start training and will do my best to help the team however I can.”

The Washington Spirit (5-4-1) face the Chicago Red Stars (6-2-1) at Benedictine University Sports Complex Stadium on June 4 at 8:00pm ET.
