Boyds, MD (June 29, 2017) – The Washington Spirit will seek to extend its current unbeaten streak to a season-high four games on Saturday when the team visits Jordan Field to face the Boston Breakers. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET with a live stream available on the NWSL and go90 websites and mobile apps.
Saturday will mark the first match-up of the season between the Spirit and Breakers. Washington has not allowed a goal in the run of play over its past three games, outscoring opponents 4-1 while earning two wins and a draw. Boston is coming off a scoreless draw on Wednesday against the Houston Dash, which snapped a four-game losing streak. The Breakers have earned seven of their nine points this season at home.
“This is an important game for our club,” said Spirit head coach and general manager Jim Gabarra. “Our goal is to maintain the improvement of our play and the momentum we’ve created in the last three games. Boston is a talented and organized team that imposes a top challenge for us.”
Washington is coming off a 1-0 home victory over Portland Thorns FC at the Maryland SoccerPlex on June 24, as a first half strike from Nigerian international forward Francisca Ordega proved to be the game-winner. Goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé and the Spirit defense notched their second straight clean sheet on their home field, as the back line limited Thorns FC to just three shots on goal. Whitney Church, Estelle Johnson, Kassey Kallman and Shelina Zadorsky each played the full 90 minutes in the win.
Ordega has now scored a goal or recorded an assist in three of her past four games, and leads the Spirit with four goals on the season. Havana Solaun is second on the team with three goals and an assist, while former Boston Breaker Kristie Mewis has netted two goals and notched an assist so far in her first year with Washington.
Adriana Leon enters the weekend leading Boston with three goals on the season, followed by Natasha Dowie and U.S. international midfielder Rose Lavelle with two each. Washington will not be tasked with facing Lavelle, the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NWSL Draft, as she recovers from a hamstring injury.
Rookie goalkeeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme saved all four shots that the Dash were able to put on frame during Wednesday’s draw in Houston, earning the first clean sheet of her pro career.
Following Saturday’s match-up with Boston, the Spirit will return home for its next game on Saturday, July 8 when the team hosts the Orlando Pride in the first ever NWSL on Lifetime Game of the Week played at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
