SEATTLE (August 5, 2018) – The Washington Spirit fell 2-0 to Seattle Reign FC on the road Sunday night, conceding a goal in each half while being shut out for a third straight match.

Jasmyne Spencer put Seattle on the scoreboard just before halftime, connecting on a close range shot from the center of the box. Spencer struck the ball into the top right corner of the net after receiving a well-placed pass from Allie Long, who tallied an assist on the play.

After Seattle took a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Spirit created a couple of scoring chances early in the second half, including two powerful attempts off the foot of forward Ashley Hatch.

Reign FC goalkeeper Lydia Williams came up with one of two highly difficult saves on the night in the 48th minute, when she was able to leap and redirect Hatch’s blistering shot which was headed for the top shelf.

Seattle’s Jodie Taylor put the game out of reach in the 71st minute, finding the net on a close range goal after receiving a long throw-in from Megan Rapinoe. The long distance throw-in all the way to the center of the box would earn an assist for Rapinoe, as the ball went straight to Taylor, who slotted home a right-footed shot into the top right corner of the net.

Defender Caprice Dydasco nearly cut into Seattle’s lead in the 80th minute, when she found room on the left side of the box after receiving a cross, and unleashed a shot headed inside the left post. However, Williams made a diving save just before the ball crossed the plane, and ultimately preserved the clean sheet.

Washington welcomed back forward Mallory Pugh, who played the final 22 minutes of the match for her first action since May 27 when she sustained a torn PCL in a game against the Houston Dash.

Midfielder Rose Lavelle made her return to NWSL competition as well with 30 minutes of second half playing time. Lavelle came back from international duty where she helped the U.S. Women’s National Team claim the Tournament of Nations title earlier this week.

The Spirit will return to action on Wednesday, visiting Utah Royals FC for the second and final time this season. Kickoff from Rio Tinto Stadium is set for 10 p.m. ET.
