Bridgeview, Ill. (July 1, 2018) – The Washington Spirit fell on the road Sunday night to the Chicago Stars 2-0 at Toyota Park.

Washington fell to 2-9-4 (10 points) as Chicago improves to 5-3-7 (22 points).

In the 34th minute, Chicago took advantage of a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead. Danielle Colaprico sent in the corner and found Casey Short, who placed her header on frame. The ball took a deflection off the post and past Spirit midfielder Meggie Doughtery Howard, stationed on the post to give the Red Stars a 1-0 advantage.

Chicago’s second goal was a highlight-reel header from Yuki Nagasato. Nagasato’s diving header on a cross from Samantha Kerr doubled the Red Stars’ lead in the 60th minute.

Washington’s offense was led by forward Ashley Hatch, who racked up four total shots. The team produced 15 total shots, including 11 in the second half. Francisca Ordega accounted for both of the Spirit’s two shots on target.

A statistically even contest, the Red Stars out-possessed the Spirit 50.5 percent to 49.5 percent. Each teams won 49 duels. Chicago completed 367 total passes as compared to Washington’s 351. The Spirit accounted for 10 corners, six more than the Red Stars took.

NWSL saves leader Aubrey Bledsoe recorded five saves on the evening. Defender Whitney Church prevented a goal in the first minute of action with her clearance in front of an empty net. The back line of Church, Estelle Johnson, Caprice Dydasco and Taylor Smith started the game together for the second consecutive game.

Havana Solaun saw action after being out for the past three games due to injury. She substituted on in second half stoppage time for Andi Sullivan.

The Spirit will play its second of three consecutive road contests as the club travels to face the Orlando Pride on Saturday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m.
