Boyds MD (March 13, 2017) – The Washington Spirit has announced the club’s 2017 NWSL preseason roster, consisting of 32 new and returning players.
The 2016 NWSL Championship finalists will bring four goalkeepers, eight defenders, 11 midfielders and 9 forwards into preseason training camp, featuring a mix of youth and veteran talent.
Four players who were selected in the 2017 NWSL College Draft – forwards Lindsay Agnew (Ohio State) and Arielle Ship (Cal Berkeley), and midfielders Meggie Dougherty Howard (Florida) and Cameron Castleberry (North Carolina) – are set to make their debuts with the Spirit in the preseason.
Along with a promising group of newcomers, Washington returns a corps of established NWSL players. Tori Huster, who led the team with 1,665 minutes played in 2016, returns to the Spirit alongside Joanna Lohman, who finished tied for the second-most goals on the team last season with four. Forward Katie Stengel matched Lohman’s total of four goals in 2016, and will be back again for the Spirit attack in 2017.
Washington returns four versatile defenders who made at least 10 starts each with the team last season: Caprice Dydasco, Shelina Zadorsky, Alyssa Kleiner and Estelle Johnson. The team also brings back goalkeepers Stephanie Labbé and Kelsey Wys, who combined to account for every minute of game action between the posts in 2016.
Wys and forward Cali Farquharson will not count toward the initial 32-player roster, as they begin camp as Out-of-Market Contracted Players.
Washington’s preseason slate includes four matches against some of the top NCAA women’s soccer programs in the nation: Penn State (March 18), North Carolina (March 25), Duke (April 1) and Virginia (April 8). The match against North Carolina will be played at Evergreen SportsPlex in Leesburg, Virginia, while the other three games will take place at the Spirit’s home venue, Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
