Over 2,500 Washington Spirit fans joined the team for their first preseason match of 2014 last Saturday against the UNC. The fans were not disappointed. With two goals in the second half, the Washington Spirit electrified the crowd.

This Saturday, March 29th the Washington Spirit will be taking on the renounced University of Virginia Women at 7pm.

Canadian Women’s National Team midfielder Diana Matheson, a key player for the Spirit in the 2013 season, joined the rest of her team at camp late last week and had already clicked with her teammates. She scored the first goal of the match against UNC in the 66th minute and assisted striker Tiffany Weimer, in the game’s second goal in the 89th. Spirit fans are anxiouis to see more of this dynamic due on the pitch in the 2014 NWSL season.

Heading into this week’s preseason match the fans are likely to see some of the newest members of the team spend some more time on the pitch. English international Jodie Taylor, a forward and Danish defender Cecilie Sandvej proved to be dangerous against UNC in the second half.

“Pre season is going very well and we are happy with the progress of the group so far. We have targets for both the team and individual players and right now we are on track. The team atmosphere has been incredible and the players have created an extremely competitive and enjoyable environment,” Spirit general manager and head coach Mark Parsons said. “We are looking forward to the next few games to see where we are but the most positive aspect of camp so far is the work ethic. We are looking forward to going up against UVA this Saturday.”
