With the regular season barreling towards the finish line, the Washington Spirit will take on FC Kansas City Wednesday evening at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The Spirit enter the match with 28 points, tied for fourth in the NWSL standings with an 8-8-4 record. FC Kansas City are sitting in second place, 11-5-4 with 37 points.

The Spirit are coming off a tie against the Portland Thorns in their last match. A lightning storm led to a lengthy delay to the start of that match and an early goal by Alex Morgan threatened to submarine the match. However, a second half equalizer by Jodie Taylor re-energized the Spirit, enabling them to a 1-1 tie. Taylor’s sensational season has been a driving force for the Spirit. She is tied for second in the NWSL with 11 goals on the season.

The Spirit will be without Taylor for Wednesday’s game as she is away with the England Women’s National Team on duty.

The Spirit will also be without Renae Cuellar for Wednesday and the rest of the playoff push. The forward will be out for 4-6 weeks with a partial meniscus tear in her right knee.

With just four matches left on the season, including three against possible playoff teams, each opportunity to get a point is vital to the Spirit’s playoff race. Three of the final four matches are at home at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Now it’s about execution. The Washington Spirit will play FC Kansas City Wednesday at 7pm ET.
