Katie Stengel had a big week for the Western Sydney Wanderers, scoring a brace and leading her team to a Boxing Day 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets. The Wanderers went down early in the 7th minute, but with Stengel’s help came roaring back to take the lead going into halftime. Despite chances from the Jets, the Wanderers held on for the win. Western Sydney is climbing up the W-League standings and now sits in fifth place. Newcastle is missing Kelsey Wys who returned home to the U.S. after tearing her ACL early in the W-League season. After joining Sydney FC just this week, Franny Ordega had a positive first experience with the team when they won their December 23 match against Brisbane Roar 1-0. Ordega came on in the 58th minute of the match and, according to Sydney FC, “looked lively in her debut off the bench and showcased both pace and trickery in the final third that had the home crowd entranced.” That’s our Franny! Sydney FC now sits in second place, just one place behind first place Perth Glory. (Match Report)

On Friday, Stengel and Ordega will face each other in a Sydney Derby that will be an important match for both teams.
