Line Sigvardsen Jensen helps lead Denmark on historic UEFA Women’s EURO run; suffers torn ACL in semifinals

Boyds, MD (August 7, 2017) – Washington Spirit midfielder Line Sigvardsen Jensen played a vital role for the Denmark National Team on a historic run in the 2017 UEFA Women’s EURO, as the Danes advanced to the title match for the first time.

Sigvardsen Jensen played the full 90 minutes in each of Denmark’s three group games, in addition to the team’s 2-1 quarterfinal victory over six-time defending UEFA Women’s EURO champion Germany. She started a fifth straight game in the semifinals against Austria, which Denmark won in penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation and overtime, but unfortunately had to come off in the 68th minute with a right knee injury, later diagnosed as a torn ACL.

The injury brings the 25-year-old’s NWSL season to an early end, as she finishes the 2017 campaign with 568 minutes played across nine appearances, including six starts. She scored the Spirit’s first goal of the season on April 22 in a 1-1 draw against the Orlando Pride, and recorded an assist on May 8 in a 4-3 home win against Sky Blue FC.

“We’re all really disappointed for Line. She’s done such a great job for our club and for her country this year,” said Spirit head coach and general manager Jim Gabarra. “We share her disappointment in not being able to play for Denmark in the EURO Final, and also the Spirit for the remainder of this year. We’re confident she’ll make a full recovery and come back as strong as ever.”

Without Sigvardsen Jensen patrolling the midfield, Denmark came up short 4-2 against host nation Netherlands in Sunday’s UEFA Women’s EURO Final, played in front of a sellout crowd of 28,182 fans at FC Twente Stadion in the city of Enschede.

Following a breakthrough 4-1 road win on Friday night against Sky Blue FC in New Jersey on Friday night, the Washington Spirit returns to action on Tuesday, August 8 for a midweek road test against the Orlando Pride. [PREVIEW]
