Boyds, MD – April 16, 2016: Briana Scurry . The Washington Spirit defeated the Boston Breakers 1-0 during their National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) match at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

Former Washington Freedom players Briana Scurry and Tiffany Roberts have been nominated for the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2017.

Scurry, who played for the Freedom from 2009-2010, is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and one-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion goalkeeper. Her career total of 173 international appearances is the second most among female soccer goalkeepers. In 2016, Scurry was named an Honorary Captain for the Washington Spirit, in recognition of her contributions as a mentor for current players and as an ambassador for women’s soccer in the Washington, D.C. area.

Roberts, who played for the Washington Freedom Reserves in 2005, also won a Women’s World Cup title and an Olympic gold medal with the U.S. Women’s National Team. She has coached college soccer since 2007, with Virginia Commonwealth University (2007-2012) and the University of Central Florida (2013-Present).
