While it has been a challenging inaugural campaign in the NWSL for the Washington Spirit, the unique housing situation that arose for two of the team’s Canadian national team players, Diana Matheson and Robyn Gayle, has turned into one of the most intriguing off-field storylines of the league’s first season.

Residing at Ingleside at King Farm, a retirement community in Rockville, the pair have become celebrities and part of a makeshift experiment in intergenerational living. They were recently joined at Ingleside by forward Conny Pohlers, who moved in after joining the team on loan from Germany last week.

Earlier this season, CBC radio broadcaster David Gutnick explored the set up for Matheson and Gayle, met some of the new friends they’ve made and examined the impact of their arrangement in a fascinating, must-listen feature that aired last week.
