The Washington Spirit fell to the Boston Breakers 2-0 on Wednesday evening at Harvard Stadium, moving the Spirit to 6-5-1 and the Breakers to 3-8-0. The last Spirit loss was over a month ago to FC Kansas City on May 11th.

At the end of a balanced and defensive first half, the Breakers broke through in the 42nd minute. Following an extended attack, forward Mollie Pathman penetrated into the box and crossed to, who cut in front of a defender and banged it past keeper Chantel Jones to give the Breakers a 1-0 advantage.

With a sense of momentum, the Breakers struck again quickly. In less than 90 seconds, the Breakers mounted another attack. A series of sharp passes led to a Jazmine Reeves cross that found forward Nkem Ezurike, who knocked it directly into Jones. The rebound fell to Courtney Jones, who calmly buried it. The two quick strikes gave the Breakers a 2-0 lead going into the half.

The second half proved just as fruitless for the Spirit as the first. Breakers keeper Alyssa Naeher saved the only two shots directed her way to earn the shutout. This was a far different game than the one these two teams played a little over a week ago. Then, the Spirit defeated the Breakers 3-2, with two goals from Jodie Taylor, who didn’t start this match. This time, the Spirit’s offense was stymied by the Breakers.

Over the course of the match, the Spirit made three substitutions. Taylor came for Veronica Perez to start the second half, Jordan Angeli entered for Christine Nairn in the 69th minute, and Kelsey Pardue subbed for Lori Lindsey in the 82nd minute. Spirit defender Danesha Adams received a yellow card for a reckless tackle in the 60th minute.

Pardue played in her first-ever match for the Spirit.

The Spirit will conclude their four-game road trip with their match against the defending champion Portland Thorns on Sunday in Portland.
