Germantown, Md.— Word of Mikaela Howell’s electric two-goal performance in her W-League debut with D.C. United Women on Saturday night has spread far beyond the confines of the Maryland SoccerPlex.
On Wednesday morning, Howell was named to the W-League’s Team of the Week for her breakout match in United Women’s regular season opener against the Virginia Beach Piranhas over the weekend. The 23-year-old from Basingstoke, England netted a long-range goal off a full spin move with her non-dominant left foot in the 36th minute of the match to give United Women a 1-0 lead, then struck again in the 70th minute to give the Black-and-Red some insurance.
Howell was named to the W-League Team of the Week alongside Player of the Week Danica Evans of the Colorado Rush, defender Samantha Harder also from the Rush, London Gryphons goalkeeper Rebecca Singer, Fredericksburg Impact defender Sandra Matute, Hamilton FC defender Alexandra Craig, Pali midfielder Servet Uzunlar, Charlotte midfielder Samantha Huecker, Central SC Cobras midfielder Taylor Parker, Fredericksburg forward Missy Wycinsky and New York Magic forward Rashidah Sherman.
Howell is tied with seven players for second on the W-League league leaders list with two goals. She will look to add to that total this Sunday when D.C. United Women host the Northern Virginia Majestics at 7:45 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
